General Introduction of Cangzhou

Cangzhou is located in the southeast of Hebei Province adjoining Beijing & Tianjin in the north and facing Bohai Sea in the east from where the Shandong Peninsula and the Liaodong Peninsula are separated. There are 10 counties, 4 cities, 2 districts and 2 State-owned farms under its jurisdiction. It covers an area of 140,000km2 with a population of 6.63million. Cangzhou was approved as one of the cities in the economic zone around Bohai Sea by the State Council in 1988 and was ratified as the third chemical city by the former Ministry of Chemical Industry in 1995.

Cangzhou enjoys convenient transportation. The north-south railways of Beijing-Shanghai and Beijing-Kowloon run through the city. The national highways of Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Fuzhou and Yinchuan-Qikou run across its territory. With the Shuozhou-Huanghua railway, Beijing-Shanghai and Shijiazhuang-Huanghua expressways being open to traffic and the Huanghua Port open to navigation, Cangzhu now is an important passageway combining such regions as middle south of Hebei Province, northwest of Shandong Province, Shaanxi and Inner Mongolia to the international market.

Cangzhou is abundant in talented people and local products. Far back to ancient China, here we have got famous doctor Bianque and militarist Sunbin in Warring States in Tang Dynasty we got geographer Jiadan and poet Gaoshi; general editor Jixiaolan who edited Sikuquanshu (Imperial Collection of Four) and Mr. Zhangzhidong, the pioneer of Westernization Movement in Qing Dynasty; Mr. Zhaobosheng and Mr. Mabenzhai, the revolutionists in Chinese modern history; Cangzhou also is the hometown of the famous contemporary writers Mr. Wangmeng, Jiangzilong, Liuxi, the artists Mr. Lidelun and Ms. Peiyanling.

Cangzhou is famous for Acrobatics, Wushu(martial arts), Ya pear, golden-thread dates. It is also hometown of casting and elbow & fittings. The China Wuqiao Acrobatic World was listed as one of the folk tourist attractions by the State Tourism Bureau. The Cangzhou Iron Lion and the Moslem Mosque are historical relic units that have been importantly preserved by the government. The Baiyangdian Lake in the Cangzhou territory has been reputed as a pearl of North China. Cangzhou benefits a lot from its rich natural resources. It occupies 95km of coastal line and is one of the largest bases producing salt in China. It yields 110,000tons of aquatic products such as fish, shrimp and crab every year. There are 2 oilfields in Cangzhou---the North China Oilfield and the Dagang Oilfield with abundant reservation of crude oil and natural gas.

Cangzhou has achieved a lot after adjusting industrial structure. For agriculture, it has formed 4 lines such as animal husbandry, herbage, vegetable and fruit-bearing forest; for industry, it forms a frame supported by chemical industry balancing with light industry, textile, mechatronics, medicine and building material. The Cangzhou Chemical Industry Co. Ltd., Cangzhou Refinery Plant, Cangzhou Fertilizer Co. Ltd. and the No. 1 Refinery Plant of North China Oilfield are leading enterprises of chemical industry. There are more than 70 kinds of chemical products such as fertilizer, caustic soda, petroleum products, PVC resin and TDI, etc. Cangzhou also is a famous base producing wire & cable which output accounts for one quarter that of the whole country. The non-State economy grows rapidly in Cangzhou. In 2000 the productive value of township enterprises accounted for 51% of GDP of Cangzhou.
